According to the World Bank, in 1988, the top 3 African countries with high net exports of goods and services in current US$ (i.e. total exports of goods and services in current US$ minus total imports of goods and services in current US$) are: South Africa (5.98B US$), Nigeria (2.68B US$), and Botswana (703.24M US$).

Conversely, in 1988, the top 3 African countries with high net imports of goods and services in current US$ (i.e. total imports of goods and services in current US$ minus total exports of goods and services in current US$ ) are: Egypt (6.25B US$), Algeria (4.19B US$), and Senegal (679.17M US$).

The World Bank defines exports of goods and services as "the value of all goods and other market services provided to the rest of the world" , and defines imports of goods and services as "the value of all goods and other market services received from the rest of the world".
