According to the World Bank, in 1974, the top 3 African countries with high net exports of goods and services by percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) (i.e. total exports of goods and services as a percentage of GDP minus total imports of goods and services as a percentage of GDP) are: Togo (37.12%), Eswatini (22.27%), and Gabon (14.29%).

On the other hand, in 1974, the top 3 African countries with high net imports of goods and services as a percentage of GDP (i.e. total imports of goods and services as a percentage of GDP minus total exports of goods and services as a percentage of GDP) are: Lesotho (63.41%), Guinea-Bissau (34.23%), and Mali (28.15%).

The World Bank defines exports of goods and services as "the value of all goods and other market services provided to the rest of the world" , and defines imports of goods and services as "the value of all goods and other market services received from the rest of the world".
