Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of US households who received Food Stamps or SNAP was 11.37% (i.e. 14,105,231 households). Percentagewise, among all US states, New Mexico had the highest percentage of its households that received Food Stamps (17.54%), followed by West Virginia (16.41%), and Louisiana (15.71%).

In numerical terms, California had the highest number of households that received Food Stamps or SNAP (1,259,489), followed by Texas (1,178,059), and Florida (1,079,253).

For the District of Columbia, there were 38,881 households that received Food Stamps (i.e. 12.54% of DC households).
