Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of the Illinois population who had Medicaid health insurance coverage was 18.94% (i.e. 2,395,420 people). Percentagewise, among all Illinois counties, Alexander County had the highest percentage of its population with Medicaid health insurance coverage (35.87%), followed by Pulaski County (33.84%), and Pope County (32.45%).

In numerical terms, Cook County had the highest number of people with Medicaid health insurance coverage (1,109,042), followed by DuPage County (100,770), and Will County (95,408).
