Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of the US population who had Medicaid health insurance coverage was 20.24% (i.e. 65,752,822 people). Percentagewise, among all US states, New Mexico had the highest percentage of its population with Medicaid health insurance coverage (33.26%), followed by Louisiana (29.29%), and West Virginia (26.75%).

In numerical terms, California had the highest number of people with Medicaid health insurance coverage (10,074,772), followed by New York (5,215,263), and Texas (4,661,327).

For the District of Columbia, there were 171,217 people with Medicaid health insurance coverage (i.e. 25.41% of the population of DC).
