Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of the US population who had Medicare health insurance coverage was 17.58% (i.e. 57,087,806 people). Percentagewise, among all US states, West Virginia had the highest percentage of its population with Medicare health insurance coverage (23.69%), followed by Maine (23.07%), and Florida (21.85%).

In numerical terms, California had the highest number of people with Medicare health insurance coverage (5,956,364), followed by Florida (4,593,407), and Texas (3,868,582).

For the District of Columbia, there were 88,251 people with Medicare health insurance coverage (i.e. 13.10% of the population of DC).
