Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2017, there were 1,148,351 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in New Jersey and they represented 12.92% of the total population of New Jersey in 2017. Essex County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (309,646), followed by Union County (116,811), and Camden County (93,864). On the other hand, Sussex County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (2,855), followed by Hunterdon County (3,004), and Cape May County (3,877).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Essex County had the highest percentage (38.84%), followed by Union County (21.06%), and Mercer County (19.58%).
