Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2016, there were 1,115,306 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in Tennessee and they represented 16.77% of the total population of Tennessee in 2016. Shelby County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (501,260), followed by Davidson County (188,266), and Hamilton County (69,325). On the other hand, Pickett County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (9), followed by Hancock County (26), and Scott County (34).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Shelby County had the highest percentage (53.51%), followed by Haywood County (50.11%), and Hardeman County (41.53%).
