Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2012, there were 63,218 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in West Virginia and they represented 3.40% of the total population of West Virginia in 2012. Kanawha County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (14,147), followed by Berkeley County (7,459), and Raleigh County (6,331). On the other hand, Calhoun County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (14), followed by Clay County (15), and Wirt County (17).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Gilmer County had the highest percentage (12.28%), followed by McDowell County (9.06%), and Raleigh County (7.99%).
