Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2013, there were 63,616 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in West Virginia and they represented 3.43% of the total population of West Virginia in 2013. Kanawha County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (14,129), followed by Berkeley County (7,530), and Raleigh County (6,296). On the other hand, Calhoun County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (12), followed by Clay County (13), and Wirt County (18).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Gilmer County had the highest percentage (11.79%), followed by McDowell County (8.92%), and Raleigh County (7.99%).
