Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2016, there were 63,334 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in West Virginia and they represented 3.46% of the total population of West Virginia in 2016. Kanawha County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (14,048), followed by Berkeley County (8,153), and Raleigh County (6,045). On the other hand, Tyler County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (18), followed by Calhoun County (18), and Clay County (20).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Gilmer County had the highest percentage (10.14%), followed by McDowell County (8.51%), and Raleigh County (7.92%).
