Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of households in North Carolina with household income of less than $40k was 33.38%. Among all North Carolina counties, Washington County had the highest percentage of households with household income of less than $40k (56.08%), followed by Bertie County (55.26%), and Robeson County (53.05%).

On the other hand, the following 3 counties had low percentages of households with household income of less than $40k: Union County (19.53%), Currituck County (20.87%), and Wake County (20.97%).
