Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of households in South Dakota with household income of less than $40k was 30.38%. Among all South Dakota counties, Todd County had the highest percentage of households with household income of less than $40k (66.24%), followed by Jackson County (59.14%), and Oglala Lakota County (54.80%).

On the other hand, the following 3 counties had low percentages of households with household income of less than $40k: Lincoln County (16.69%), Harding County (19.96%), and Hanson County (20.80%).
