Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of households in West Virginia with household income of less than $40k was 40.55%. Among all West Virginia counties, McDowell County had the highest percentage of households with household income of less than $40k (65.77%), followed by Mingo County (55.71%), and Clay County (54.59%).

On the other hand, the following 3 counties had low percentages of households with household income of less than $40k: Jefferson County (22.70%), Berkeley County (28.00%), and Putnam County (29.11%).
