Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of households in the United States with household income of less than $40k was 29.23%. Among all US states and DC, Mississippi had the highest percentage of households with household income of less than $40k (41.96%), followed by West Virginia (40.55%), and Louisiana (39.42%). On the other hand, the following 3 states had low percentages of households with household income of less than $40k: Maryland (20.87%), Hawaii (21.31%), and Utah (21.62%).
