According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in May 2004, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI was 188.7 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 2.9%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Motor fuel: 33.5%
  2. Food at home: 4%
  3. Food away from home: 3.4%

The CPI-U is based on the expenditures of almost all residents of urban or metropolitan areas, including professionals, the self-employed, the poor, the unemployed, and retired people, as well as urban wage earners and clerical workers.
