According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in December 2013, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI was 222.96 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 0.5%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Alcoholic beverages: 3.5%
  2. Rent of primary residence: 2.9%
  3. Owners' equivalent rent of residences: 2.6%

The CPI-U is based on the expenditures of almost all residents of urban or metropolitan areas, including professionals, the self-employed, the poor, the unemployed, and retired people, as well as urban wage earners and clerical workers.
