According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in August 2002, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): South - Size Class B/C was 110.9 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 1.0%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Rent of primary residence: 3.1%
  2. Owners' equivalent rent of residences: 2.3%
  3. Alcoholic beverages: 2.1%

The CPI-U is based on the expenditures of almost all residents of urban or metropolitan areas, including professionals, the self-employed, the poor, the unemployed, and retired people, as well as urban wage earners and clerical workers.
