According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in September 2008, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): South - Size Class D was 215.258 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 7.2%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Motor fuel: 40.1%
  2. Household energy: 12.4%
  3. Food at home: 7.5%

The CPI-U is based on the expenditures of almost all residents of urban or metropolitan areas, including professionals, the self-employed, the poor, the unemployed, and retired people, as well as urban wage earners and clerical workers.
