According to data from the US BLS, the following US states added the highest number of jobs to the Total Nonfarm industry (not seasonally adjusted) in January, 2004:

  1. Alaska: -4,900
  2. Wyoming: -6,400
  3. South Dakota: -9,800

On the other hand, the following states added the lowest number of jobs to the Total Nonfarm industry (not seasonally adjusted) in January, 2004:

  1. New York: -313,600
  2. California: -304,400
  3. Illinois: -185,800
