According to data from the US BLS, the following US states added the highest number of jobs to the Total Private industry (not seasonally adjusted) in January, 2003:

  1. Alaska: -4,600
  2. Wyoming: -5,300
  3. Vermont: -6,400

On the other hand, the following states added the lowest number of jobs to the Total Private industry (not seasonally adjusted) in January, 2003:

  1. California: -335,400
  2. New York: -279,200
  3. Illinois: -176,900
