According to data from the US BLS, the following US states added the highest number of jobs to the Total Private industry (not seasonally adjusted) in August, 2004:

  1. Michigan: 59,100
  2. California: 34,900
  3. Texas: 25,000

On the other hand, the following states added the lowest number of jobs to the Total Private industry (not seasonally adjusted) in August, 2004:

  1. New Jersey: -6,700
  2. New York: -5,700
  3. Massachusetts: -5,600
