According to data from the US BLS, the following US states added the highest number of jobs to the Total Private industry (not seasonally adjusted) in January, 2004:

  1. Alaska: -3,400
  2. Wyoming: -5,500
  3. Vermont: -7,400

On the other hand, the following states added the lowest number of jobs to the Total Private industry (not seasonally adjusted) in January, 2004:

  1. California: -285,900
  2. New York: -271,500
  3. Illinois: -166,800
