Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of the North Carolina population without a health insurance coverage was 10.74% (i.e. 1,092,162 people). Percentagewise, among all North Carolina counties, Swain County had the highest percentage of its population with no health insurance coverage (21.24%), followed by Hyde County (19.49%), and Greene County (17.22%).

In numerical terms, Mecklenburg County had the highest number of people without a health insurance coverage (127,475), followed by Wake County (94,564), and Guilford County (49,557).
