Based on the US Census ACS-5Yrs estimates, in 2021, the percentage of the South Dakota population without a health insurance coverage was 9.59% (i.e. 82,946 people). Percentagewise, among all South Dakota counties, Oglala Lakota County had the highest percentage of its population with no health insurance coverage (41.91%), followed by Buffalo County (41.59%), and Mellette County (38.10%).
In numerical terms, Minnehaha County had the highest number of people without a health insurance coverage (15,723), followed by Pennington County (11,961), and Oglala Lakota County (5,793).
