According to the data from the US 2020 decennial Census, in April 2020, there were 17,842 people in South Dakota who identified their race as Black or African American Alone, which is 2.01% of the total population of South Dakota. Minnehaha County had the highest number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone (11,527), followed by Pennington County (1,420), and Lincoln County (1,132). On the other hand, the three counties with the least number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone were: Ziebach County (0), Campbell County (0), and Buffalo County (0).

In terms of the percentage of each county's total population, Minnehaha County had the highest percentage, with 5.85% of its population identifying their race as Black or African American Alone, followed by Brookings County (1.85%), and Lincoln County (1.74%).
