According to the US Census Bureau estimates, in 2012, the net migration rate per 1,000 population for North Dakota was 17.72. McKenzie County had the highest net migration rate per 1,000 population (119.68), followed by Williams County (79.15), and Billings County (74.75). On the other hand, Sheridan County had the lowest net migration rate per 1,000 population (-22.31), followed by Pembina County (-17.56), and Logan County (-13.29).

Net migration rate for a county refers to the difference between the number of migrants, both domestic and international, moving to the county and those leaving the county per 1,000 of the county's mid-year population.
