US Number of Fetal Deaths By Mother's Race and Ethnicity in 2022 (CDC)
According to the CDC data, in 2022, there were 40,113 recorded fetal deaths in the US. Non-Hispanic White mothers had the highest number with 15,725 fetal deaths (39.20% of total), followed by Non-Hispanic Black or African American mothers with 10,172 fetal deaths (25.36% of total), and Hispanic or Latino mothers with 7,194 fetal deaths (17.93% of total).
Under 20 Weeks Gestation Period: 18,354 fetal deaths occurred between the first week and 19th week of gestation. Non-Hispanic White mothers experienced the highest number with 7,005 fetal deaths (38.17%), followed by Non-Hispanic Black or African American mothers with 4,554 fetal deaths (24.81%), and Hispanic or Latino mothers with 2,711 fetal deaths (14.77%).
20 Weeks and Over Gestation Period: 20,288 fetal deaths occurred within the gestation period of 20 weeks and Over. Non-Hispanic White mothers experienced the highest number with 8,333 fetal deaths (41.07%), followed by Non-Hispanic Black or African American mothers with 5,181 fetal deaths (25.54%), and Hispanic or Latino mothers with 4,357 fetal deaths (21.48%).

The CDC defines “Fetal death” as: "death prior to the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of human conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy and which is not an induced termination of pregnancy. The death is indicated by the fact that after such expulsion or extraction, the fetus does not breathe or show any other evidence of life such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles."
