The Race Gap Between Sentenced US Prisoners (2006 - 2016)

As at December 2016, the United States had an estimated 1,459,533 prisoners sentenced to more than 1 year in state and federal prisons. This data for sentenced prisoners does not include prisoners who have not received a term of imprisonment from the court or prisoners with a sentence of 1 year or less.

The demograpics of sentenced US prisoners consists of higher percentages of Blacks, Whites, and Hispanics compared to other races. There are more Blacks than Whites, and more Whites than Hispanics.

In 2016, 33.4% of sentenced US prisoners were Black, 30.2% were White and 23.3% were Hispanic. Between 2006 and 2016, the sentenced US prison demographics consisted of (33 - 39)% Black, (30 - 34)% White, (20 - 23)% Hispanic, and (6 - 12)% Other. This data was collected from the US Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).
