Based on data from the US Department of Education, for the 2021-2022 school year, the following US states were among the top 5 who had the highest percentage of their Grade 8 students being proficient in Reading or Language Arts: Maine (84.8%), Iowa (74.1%), Michigan (59.9%), Wyoming (58.4%), and Texas (57.2%).

It was 31.4% for District of Columbia, and 12% for the Bureau of Indian Education.
