Based on data from the US Department of Education, for the 2021-2022 school year, the following US states were among the top 5 who had the highest percentage of their High School students being proficient in Reading or Language Arts: South Carolina (84.3%), Maine (82.8%), New York (73.9%), Iowa (70.2%), and Washington (69.1%).

It was 33% for District of Columbia, and 20% for the Bureau of Indian Education.
