RE: Ghana 2020 Presidential Election Results

This article is a follow-up of my previous article that provided a visualization of the results of the recent 2020 presidential election of Ghana based on the regional summary results provided by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC). Since then, the Electoral Commision of Ghana has made public the constituency summary results as well.
Naturally, my first reaction is to add that data to the regional summary results and expect the results to somehow match smoothly to provide a lower level view of the data. However, there were several discrepancies in the data when analyzed bottom-up from the constituency level. My goal here is to document the discrepancies I found, call attention to these errors to be fixed, and provide visualizations of the election results based on the constituency summary results.
The discrepancies I identified can generally be grouped into two main groups: (1) Constituency summaries that do not add up, and (2) Regional Summaries for candidates that do not equal the sum of the constituency votes. I provide details of these groups of discrepancies below.
Constituency Summaries That Do Not Add Up
The sum of the valid votes for the following 11 constituencies does not equal the total valid votes recorded on their respective constituency summary reports.
- Techiman South Constituency, Bono East Region: The sum of the valid votes for all the candidates in Techiman South is supposed to be 99,436 instead of the 97,223 recorded on the summary report below; a difference of -2,213 votes. Specifically, each of the candidates got the following votes: NA Akufo-Addo (46,379), JD Mahama(52,034), CK Andrews(720), IK Greenstreet(46), A Donkor(24), HH Lartey(16), H Ayariga(54), PK Akpaloo(24), DA Apasera(45), BA Dzogbenuku(19), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(29), AKA Walker(46).
- Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency, Ashanti Region: The total valid votes for all candidates is supposed to be 15,685 instead of the 15,689 recorded on the summary report below; a difference of 4 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo (6,331), JD Mahama(9,194), CK Andrews(56), IK Greenstreet(16), A Donkor(3), HH Lartey(7), H Ayariga(16), PK Akpaloo(7), DA Apasera(12), BA Dzogbenuku(3), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(9), AKA Walker(31).
- Asawase Constituency, Ashanti Region: The total valid votes for all candidates is supposed to be 83,054 instead of the 83,051 on the summary report below; a difference of -3 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(35,214), JD Mahama(47,460), CK Andrews(248), IK Greenstreet(32), A Donkor(10), HH Lartey(7), H Ayariga(15), PK Akpaloo(9), DA Apasera(22), BA Dzogbenuku(16), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(11), AKA Walker(10).
- Upper Denkyira West Constituency, Central Region: The total valid votes is supposed to be 36,305 instead of the 37,187 recorded on the summary report below; a difference of 882 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(18,413), JD Mahama(17,136), CK Andrews(654), IK Greenstreet(15), A Donkor(13), HH Lartey(4), H Ayariga(16), PK Akpaloo(15), DA Apasera(10), BA Dzogbenuku(5), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(7), AKA Walker(17).
- Mfantseman Constituency, Central Region: The total valid votes is supposed to be 68,567 instead of the 70,166 on summary report below; a difference of 1,599 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates as shown on the pink sheet are: NA Akufo-Addo(34,939), JD Mahama(32,194), CK Andrews(1,136), IK Greenstreet(51), A Donkor(61), HH Lartey(20), H Ayariga(18), PK Akpaloo(38), DA Apasera(7), BA Dzogbenuku(38), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(24), AKA Walker(41).
- Ayawaso Central Constituency, Greater Accra Region: The total valid votes is supposed to be 62,406 instead of the 62,284 reported on the summary report below; a difference of -122 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(32,166), JD Mahama(29,838), CK Andrews(283), IK Greenstreet(31), A Donkor(11), HH Lartey(4), H Ayariga(13), PK Akpaloo(8), DA Apasera(8), BA Dzogbenuku(20), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(20), AKA Walker(4).
- Ledzokuku Constituency, Greater Accra Region: The total votes is supposed to be 110,636 instead of the 110,626 reported on the summary report below; a difference of -10 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(50,530), JD Mahama(59,096), CK Andrews(747), IK Greenstreet(81), A Donkor(19), HH Lartey(11), H Ayariga(21), PK Akpaloo(21), DA Apasera(8), BA Dzogbenuku(34), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(33), AKA Walker(35).
- Chereponi Constituency, North East Region: The total votes is supposed to be 32,266 instead of the 32,261 reported on the summary report below; a difference of -5 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(17,388), JD Mahama(14,179), CK Andrews(179), IK Greenstreet(36), A Donkor(24), HH Lartey(31), H Ayariga(140), PK Akpaloo(60), DA Apasera(127), BA Dzogbenuku(13), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(21), AKA Walker(68).
- Tamale North Constituency, Northern Region: The total valid votes is supposed to be 40,696 instead of the 40,688 reported on the summary report below; a difference of -8 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(12,474), JD Mahama(27,875), CK Andrews(109), IK Greenstreet(95), A Donkor(13), HH Lartey(5), H Ayariga(24), PK Akpaloo(17), DA Apasera(35), BA Dzogbenuku(30), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(8), AKA Walker(11).
- Yendi Constituency, Northern Region: The total valid votes is supposed to be 64,321 instead of the 64,381 recorded on the summary report below; a difference of 60 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(38,822), JD Mahama(24,942), CK Andrews(117), IK Greenstreet(49), A Donkor(15), HH Lartey(26), H Ayariga(47), PK Akpaloo(95), DA Apasera(83), BA Dzogbenuku(18), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(21), AKA Walker(86).
- Krachi West Constituency, Oti Region: The total valid votes is supposed to be 23,074 instead of the 23436 reported on the summary report below; a difference of 362 votes. The specific votes gained by the candidates are: NA Akufo-Addo(9,697), JD Mahama(13,052), CK Andrews(206), IK Greenstreet(16), A Donkor(13), HH Lartey(7), H Ayariga(7), PK Akpaloo(10), DA Apasera(4), BA Dzogbenuku(29), NK Agyeman-Rawlings(20), AKA Walker(13).
Differences in Regional Summaries
The following are the differences discovered when all constituency data is summed together for each region and compared to the regional summary results. I have intentionally left out a comparison of Bono East region from this analysis since the regional summary results of Bono East did not include its Techiman South constituency.
- Ahafo Region: The following are differences discovered in the summaries for candidates:
- The total votes gained by CK Andrews is supposed to be 1,490 instead of 1,493; a difference of 3 votes.
- The total votes gained by IK Greenstreet is supposed to be 191 instead of 194; a difference of 3 votes.
- The total votes gained by PK Akpaloo is supposed to be 112 instead of 113; a difference of 1 vote.
- The total votes gained by DAA Apasera is supposed to be 83 votes instead of 82; a difference of -1 vote.
- The total votes gained by BA Dzogbenuku is supposed to be 51 instead of 52; a difference of 1.
- Bono Region: Differences in candidate summaries are as follows:
- The total votes gained by JD Mahama is supposed to be 203,279 instead of 203,329, a difference of 50 votes.
- Central Region Differences in candidate summaries are as follows:
- The total gained by A Donkor is supposed to be 520 instead of 478; a difference of -42 votes.
- The total votes gained by HH Lartey is supposed to be 363 instead of 361 ; a difference of -2.
- The total votes gained by H Ayariga is supposed to be 448 instead of 468; a difference of 20 votes.
- The total votes gained by PK Akpaloo is supposed to be 617 instead of 586; a difference of -31 votes.
- The total votes gained by DAA Apasera is supposed to be 292 instead of 323; a difference of 31.
- The total votes of BA Dzogbenuku is supposed to be 1,056 instead of 1,042; a difference of -14.
- The total votes gained by Agyeman-Rawlings is supposed to be 430 instead of 467; a difference of 37 votes.
- The total votes gained by AKA Walker is supposed to be 841 instead of 804; a difference of -37 votes.
- Greater Accra Region Differences in candidate summaries are as follows:
- The total votes gained by PK Akpaloo is supposed to be 524 instead of 522; a difference of -2 votes.
- Northern Differences in candidate summaries are as follows:
- The total votes gained by NA Akufo-Addo is supposed to be 409,063 instead of 409,963; a difference of 900 votes.
- The total votes gained by JD Mahama is supposed to be 47,6650 instead of 47,6550; a difference of -100 votes.
- The total votes gained by IK Greenstreet is supposed to be 1,516 instead of 1,510; a difference of -6 votes.
- The total votes gained by H Ayariga is supposed to be 899 instead of 900; a difference of 1 votes.
- The total votes gained by BA Dzogbenuku is supposed to be 499 instead of 498; a difference of -1 votes.
- The total votes gained by AKA Walker is supposed to be 1,260 instead of 1,259; a difference of -1 votes.
- Oti Region Differences in candidate summaries are as follows:
- The total valid votes gained by NK Agyeman-Rawlings is supposed to be 253 instead of 263; a difference of 10 votes.
