According to the data from the US 2020 decennial Census, in April 2020, there were 45,904 people in New Mexico who identified their race as Black or African American Alone, which is 2.17% of the total population of New Mexico. Bernalillo County had the highest number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone (21,344), followed by Doña Ana County (4,072), and Sandoval County (3,327). On the other hand, the three counties with the least number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone were: Harding County (4), De Baca County (8), and Mora County (14).

In terms of the percentage of each county's total population, Curry County had the highest percentage, with 5.99% of its population identifying their race as Black or African American Alone, followed by Otero County (3.92%), and Lea County (3.76%).
