According to the data from the US 2020 decennial Census, in April 2020, there were 26,783 people in North Dakota who identified their race as Black or African American Alone, which is 3.44% of the total population of North Dakota. Cass County had the highest number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone (12,963), followed by Grand Forks County (3,065), and Ward County (3,024). On the other hand, the three counties with the least number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone were: Emmons County (0), Bowman County (0), and Towner County (2).

In terms of the percentage of each county's total population, Cass County had the highest percentage, with 7.03% of its population identifying their race as Black or African American Alone, followed by Williams County (5.12%), and Ward County (4.33%).
