According to the data from the US 2020 decennial Census, in April 2020, there were 1,092,948 people in Tennessee who identified their race as Black or African American Alone, which is 15.82% of the total population of Tennessee. Shelby County had the highest number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone (477,321), followed by Davidson County (173,092), and Hamilton County (64,428). On the other hand, the three counties with the least number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone were: Pickett County (8), Van Buren County (22), and Fentress County (30).

In terms of the percentage of each county's total population, Shelby County had the highest percentage, with 51.34% of its population identifying their race as Black or African American Alone, followed by Haywood County (50.56%), and Hardeman County (40.04%).
