According to the data from the US 2020 decennial Census, in April 2020, there were 65,813 people in West Virginia who identified their race as Black or African American Alone, which is 3.67% of the total population of West Virginia. Kanawha County had the highest number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone (13,592), followed by Berkeley County (9,364), and Raleigh County (5,847). On the other hand, the three counties with the least number of people who identify as Black or African American Alone were: Tyler County (4), Wirt County (6), and Webster County (13).

In terms of the percentage of each county's total population, Gilmer County had the highest percentage, with 12.65% of its population identifying their race as Black or African American Alone, followed by McDowell County (11.32%), and Raleigh County (7.84%).
