Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category IV: Ante-mortem Inspection On Thursday, April 24th, at approximately 0617 hours, the SPHV observed a black beef cow with her head stuck between the two lower bars on the gate panel between pens 11A and 11B. After approximately 4 minutes of the Pen's Employee and Pen’s Manager attempting to free the cow's head, establishment personnel elected to stun the animal in the pens. I did not observe the cow show signs of distress or injury, and the stun was correctly performed. No regulatory control action was taken due to the observed immediate and effective corrective actions. After consulting with a Denver District DVMO, it was determined that this situation was an incident of noncompliance due to unnecessary openings where the head, feet or legs of an animal may be injured. The plant manager was verbally notified of the forthcoming noncompliance. This establishment operates under a Robust Systematic Approach to Slaughter and Humane Handling of Livestock.
