Non-Compliance Description:

On 5/9/2021, at approximately 1100 hours, I SPHV Dr. REDACTED was performing a livestock humane handling verification on the outdoor animal pens when the follow non-compliance was observed: Three (3) of the covered USDA inspected pens had sharp metal edges from metal wiring near the entryway of the pens and along the underside of the enclosure gate. One of the pens had tufts of hair stuck to the sharp edge near the entryway. Additionally, the large USDA inspected pen was missing the original gate/paneling, and it was replaced with a metal frame that had two large gaps. Due to these gaps, cattle would not be able to be kept in this pen without possibility of escape or injury. There were no animals within these pens at the time of inspection, however, the sharp edges in the pens pose a risk to injury to animals moving into the pens. I notified Yahya Nasrat, plant manager, of the above situation and that a non-compliance record (NR) would be issued. This finding represents a non-compliance with 9 CFR 313.1. This NR is linked to JLH2012032230N/1 (3/30/21) for the same root cause that has occurred within the last 90 days.
