313.16(a)(1)
At 0845 during slaughter operations I (REDACTED) was monitoring the kill process. At this time I heard a gun shot and a cow vocalized. I immediately heard another gun shot and another vocalization, then another shot was immediately fired and then the kill gate was lifted for the animal to come to the kill floor. I then checked the animal to see if the animal was rendered unconscious. The animal was unconscious, and was lifted for further processing. I tagged the knock box, with a USDA Rejected tag. I then call my supervisor and informed her of what happened. I then spoke to Nancy Roy (One of the plant owners) and informed her an NR would be issued. Regulation 313.16(a)(1) addresses the need for immediate Unconsciousness when using a firearm.
