HATS Category VIII – Stunning Effectiveness On April 12, 2021, I (REDACTED) at 0543 hours was observing stunning procedures at the Subject holding pen after inspection for Suspects had been performed. The operator applied a handheld captive bolt gun to a market hog’s head and shot. The hog remained standing upright and conscious. It was alert, eyes and head tracking the movements of the operator, and ears were erect. There was no vocalization. I observed a hole in the hog’s head. Operator then changed guns and the second shot was effective. Observing with me was REDACTED, Barn FSQA and I informed her of the noncompliance. In a few moments, REDACTED, Barn Supervisor and REDACTED, Fresh Side Superintendent arrived and were also informed of the noncompliance and the establishment’s failure to comply with the regulatory requirements of 9CFR 313.15(a)1.
