HATS Category IV Ante-Mortem Inspection On Monday June 28, 2021 at approximately 10:00 AM while Food Inspector REDACTED was inspecting swine slaughter at Groff’s Meats, plant # M9442, he observed an over stimulated hog jump over an approximate 18-inch concrete retaining wall supporting the gate to the stun-box. The hog, in an excited manner, was running around the slaughter room floor trying to escape. The plant employees managed to block any escape route from the slaughter area and directed the hog back to the stun box area. At that time an employee performing the stunning of the hog successfully stunned the hog outside the stun-box rendering it unconscious. No retain tag was applied as employees took immediate corrective actions to control the hog. This is noncompliant with 9 CFR § 313.2 (a). I notified the plant owner, Frank Groff of the Non-Compliance. Previous NR’s UTC 0909035824 N/1 dated 4/6/2021. Procedure was either ineffective or not properly applied as demonstrated by today’s regulatory failure.
