At approximately 2:45 pm, as I was performing HATS category VIII Stunning Effectiveness, I observed the following humane handling noncompliance. A sow was brought into the stunning area and prior to stunning, I exited the room so establishment management could stun the last animal of the day using a handgun (.380 auto Ruger). After the first shot was fired, I heard the sow squeal indicating that the first stun was not effective, and the sow was conscious. Immediately a second shot was fired, and the squealing stopped. After the second shot was fired, I entered the stunning area and confirmed that the sow was unconscious. To ensure the sow did not return to consciousness, establishment management performed a security stun using a hand-held captive bolt. While performing post-mortem inspection, I observed two holes on the sow’s head, one from the gunshots and another from the captive bolt. The entrance wound's from the gunshots overlapped each other on the sow’s head, appearing as one hole. Afterwards, I notified REDACTED of the forthcoming noncompliance record. No US retain/reject tag was used since the second shot was immediate and effective. Discussion was held with Mr. REDACTED and he provided verbal corrective actions.
