Barakat Slaughter House, LLC: Non-Compliance to Humane Livestock Handling in 2022 (USDA)

HATS Category II – Truck Unloading On 4/20/2022 at approximately 900 hours, while observing truck unloading of lambs and goats, I observed the following noncompliance. When unloading the last two animals off a large trailer I observed one employee begin to pull an apparently blind goat by the horns towards the door to the trailer. I immediately told the employee to stop and the employee picked up the goat and brought it to the door of the trailer. I observed a second employee raise his leg off the ground and back and deliver a single kick to the last sheep on the trailer to move it towards the door of the trailer. I immediately told the employee to stop kicking. REDACTED, Plant manager, was notified of the noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.2(a).

On 10/5/2021 at 1015 hours while performing a Livestock Humane Handling Water and Feed Availability Task I observed the following noncompliance. I walked up to a livestock trailer parked outside the building that was not attached to a truck. Inside the livestock trailer there were two compartments. One compartment contained approximately 8 lambs that did not have access to water. The other compartment contained a bucket of water but this bucket was inaccessible to the livestock. I asked Mr. REDACTED, Plant Manager, about the trailer and he said it was dropped off at 600 hours that morning and was being used to hold animals until they were slaughtered. He said an employee had moved the animals into the front compartment for easier access and forgot to move the water bucket to the front compartment. Mr. REDACTED immediately had the employee move the water bucket into the section of the trailer with the lambs. This is a noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.2(e). Mr. REDACTED was notified of the noncompliance.
