On April 22, 2022 at approximately 0730 hours while performing verification of HATS Category IV, Facilities, the following observation was documented. The stainless steel panel on the wall of the knock box opposite the slaughter floor was in disrepair. The lower edge of the panel was exposed and bent inward towards the inside of the knock box. Additionally, the upper corners of the same panel were bent inwards, with the exposed point of the corner directed towards the inside of the knock box as well. Both the exposed edges and corners are directed towards the animal side and at a level where either the feet or head and neck areas could be injured as a result. This is noncompliant with 9 CFR 313.1(a) which requires that facilities be free from sharp or protruding objects which may cause injury or pain to the animals. Establishment management was notified of the noncompliance and that he knock box would remain under regulatory control until the repairs were completed. This was discussed with REDACTED , Plant Manager , and he has ordered a thicker panel to replace the panel that is bent and will present an acceptable repair before slaughter can be performed .
