At approximately 1215 on September 2, 2022 while performing routine HATS activities in the barn at M818 SPHV REDACTED made the observation herein. HATS category VI electronic prod/alternative object usage resulted in the following: an hourly establishment employee working in pen 11 which is used as the drive pen for hogs to the chute was observed to strike a market hog between the eyes with a rattle paddle. The employee was also observed to strike the previously mentioned market hog on the bridge of the snout with the rattle paddle. The hog vocalized both times after being struck on the face with the rattle paddle. This observation in non-compliant with 9CFR313.2 (b) which requires all implements used to drive animals be used in such a manner as to minimize excitement or injury. REDACTED, Barn Supervisor, REDACTED, vice president, REDACTED, kill superintendent, were all informed that a noncompliance record would be issued for the observation.

At approximately 0820 hours on December 6, 2021 while conducting ante-mortem inspection, HATS category IV, in the barn at HK Cooperative, CSI REDACTED made the observation contained herein. There was a loose board that was located between pens 2 and 3. The board was dropped down at one end into pen three at a level that created an opening where hogs could get their heads entrapped. This observation is non-compliant with 9CFR313.1 (a) which requires livestock holding pens to be maintained in good repair. The pen was tagged with US retain/Reject tag # B41225419. REDACTED and REDACTED were informed of the non-compliant finding.
