While performing HATS Category VII - Observation for Slips and Falls at approximately 0650 hours, I observed the following noncompliance: The flooring of pen two in the barn was covered in ice buildup approximately an inch thick across 90% of the pen. The pen measures approximately twenty feet by twenty feet. Four bison were present in pen number two. The front gate facing towards the chute was open so the bison had an opportunity to move out of the iced area in the circular chute area. However, all four bison were in the pen while I was present. Bison could not access the water trough without walking on the ice. I observed one bison slip but caught himself and did not fall. I did not observe any animals with injuries. I notified Barn Superintendent REDACTED of the noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.1(b). The establishment moved the animals uneventfully to another pen that did not have the ice buildup.
