HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On Monday, October 18, 2021 at 12:17, while performing a routine humane handling task, I observed slaughter employee utilize a 22LR rifle to stun a market hog. I positioned myself behind a wall for protection. I heard the first stun attempt, but it did not immediately render the hog insensible, as I could hear faint vocalization from the hog. After a brief delay, I heard a second shot from the .22LR rifle with loud vocalization and the slaughter employee state "Shit, what the hell." After a brief delay I heard the third shot from the .22LR rifle. The vocalization of the hog stopped following the third stun. The slaughter employee "ok'd" the area. I verified that the hog was unconscious and inspected the head (skin attached) and observed three bullet holes. When the head was skinned there were three holes with bone fragments, all within an inch of each other. All holes penetrated the skull in the target zone. I verbally informed REDACTED, Owner of establishment M5652, of the noncompliance. Denver District Office was contacted through supervisory channels. I used US Reject tag number B19-204916 to take regulatory control at the knocking box until the establishment informed provided corrective actions. At 13:00, REDACTED-owner informed me that the corrective actions will be to utilize a 22-Mag firearm on all hogs. At this time, after correlating with the Front Line Supervisor, I removed the USDA tag and released regulatory control in order to let the establishment resume slaughter
