HATS Category VIII Stunning effectiveness At approximately 0915 hrs., the establishment attempted to stun an under 30-month steer, using a 30/30 firearm stun device. The first stun was observed to be ineffective as the animal displayed signs of sensibility wherein the animal remained standing. The establishment employee immediately recognized the stun failure and procured the 22-magnum backup stun weapon from the second stun employee and delivered an immediate and effective second stun, which rendered the animal insensible. The animal remained insensible thereafter. The establishment owner, REDACTED was immediately notified of the non-compliance and forthcoming issuance of the associated non-compliance record. The knock box was tagged with USDA Reject tag B9662842.

Category VIII Stunning Effectiveness At approximately 12:20 on December 29, 2021, while performing a Livestock Humane Handling Task, I observed an establishment employee move a beef into the knock box. The establishment employee made an initial stun attempt with a firearm (22 magnum). The attempt was ineffective, as the animal remained standing. The second establishment employee had a higher caliber firearm (30/30) ready and was standing by. He delivered an immediate and effective corrective action stun attempt with the backup firearm, which rendered the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. The knock box was tagged with USDA Retain tag MPD52153487. Plant owner Mr. REDACTED was notified of the regulatory control action and of the non-compliance.
