HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness Approximately 0800 hours I, the CSI, performing post-mortem inspection with a CSI in training as I heard an employee behind me yell. I turned to observe a cow running toward us on the slaughter floor. The other CSI and I both went up on the stairs for the final rail to get out of the way as the cow ran through the slaughter floor and out the back door. We proceeded outside to observe what was happening. The cow ran to a back field where establishment employees followed in a vehicle. The cow and establishment employees were behind a building so we could not observe what had happened after that. However, we heard the 12-gauge shotgun discharge once. Once the cow was brought to the front door of the kill floor where the cow was shackled and hoisted, I verified where the stun holes were in the head. I asked the Floor Supervisor to show me. The firearm bullet penetrated through the ear toward the head, and I observed another penetrating hole on the front of the skull. I applied U.S. Reject tag #B38404756 to the stun box. I verbally informed the establishment management that a noncompliance would be documented. The Denver District Management Team was contacted through supervisory channels. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause in the past 90 days.
