HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness At approximately 10:10am on Wednesday 02/16/23 while verifying HATS Category VIII Stunning Effectiveness on the kill floor, I, the Supervisory Public Health Veterinarian (SPHV), observed the following non-compliance. I observed the stun operator administer two stun attempts to render a market swine unconscious utilizing an electrical stunner for both attempts. Following the first stun attempt to the head, I observed the animal vocalizing with squeals for approximately three seconds. I observed the stun operator immediately apply the second stun to the head, which effectively rendered the animal unconscious. The stun operator than followed with a second stun to the head and a third stun to the heart. Due to the application of prompt corrective actions a regulatory control action was not taken. The acting plant manager and the stun operator were verbally notified of the impending non-compliance record. The Denver District Management Team was contacted through supervisory channels. There have been non noncompliance records issued for the same root cause within the past 90 days.
